Pioneer - cont. from page13“ I try to look at the big picture,” explained Marty. “Very few people develop 3,500 acres. You can spread the cost over the land, but I was wholesale. I built the infrastructure, big roads, sewer, water and paid for all the up front costs. I started in 1983 and it just took time.” ~ Marty Wenderdue to the impassioned endeavors of one man.“I try to look at the big picture,” explained Marty. “Very few people develop 3,500 acres. You can spread the cost over the land, but I was wholesale. I built the infrastructure, big roads, sewer, water and paid for all the up front costs. Istarted in 1983 and it just took time.”Early on in the development stages of the area,Marty was also approached by Southwestern Bell. They wanted a small piece of property and right-of- way to install fiber optics underground, thin flexible fibers of glass or other transparent solids to transmit light signals, chiefly for telecommunications, revolutionizing long-distance phone calls, cable TV and internet.“For ten years, I didn’t realize the impact of the decision,” said Marty. “But the fiber optics meant that these huge data centers and financial service centers were able to come to the west.”Marty’s motivation and foresight of what the Northwest side could and would one day become never wavered. “I like to do things that other people say can’t be done,” stated Marty. “My wife calls me ‘Mr. Fix It.’ If there’s a problem, I thrive on solving it. All the easy deals have already been done, the only ones left are the hard ones. Whenever someone says you can’t do it or it doesn’t make sense – you have to evaluate yourself. You can’t always take what people tell you.”Studies predict that in the next 10 years, 40 percent of the city’s growth will be between Bandera and Highway 90. Marty’s continued impact on this area cannot be understated. The future of San Antonio will continue to be built not only upon his early vision, endeavors, ingenuity, and savvy deals but also his current involvement in the same pursuits.Pope John Paul II Mass held in San Antonio September 13, 1987 at Westover Hills.A celebration of the opening of the access road of State Highway 151 in May 1987.Marty Wender in a helicopter over the NW side of San Antonio foreseeing the future..14 www.GreatNWGuide.com2017-2018Business Development
