  Reagan Welcomes New Cross
Country Coach
BThis new school year, the Reagan High School athletic department
welcomed new
Country Coach Courtney Johnson to the Rattler family. Careers in coaching and education run in Johnson’s family. Her mom was an elementary school teacher and her father, a head track and cross country coach. Both parents fueled Johnson’s desire to become a teacher and coach as well.
Johnson has been running competitively since she was in the third grade. She continued running in junior high, high school and in college at UTSA.
“I love the perseverance it takes to run,” Johnson described. “I love the moment when the race or the workout is so hard and you don’t think you could possibly keep going, yet you keep going and you push harder than you thought you could.”
After graduating from UTSA, Johnson taught and coached on the junior high level in Clear Lake, TX for two years. She then taught at Bradley Middle School for two years where she led the track team to a Large Zone and Meet of Champion victory. Johnson has also spent time in Kenya and Haiti doing mission work. She describes the opportunity to run in Kenya has one of her life’s “coolest experiences.”
In her first year at Reagan, Johnson is looking forward to continuing the tradition of excellence and encouraging an atmosphere where the team comes before self.
“I truly believe talent can win a meet, but only a team can win Championships,” Johnson said.
Johnson feels humbled to be a part of the Rattler family and an athletic program filled with tradition and pride. She is also

grateful for the parents of her athletes who have welcomed her with open arms. Her goal as a coach is to instill commitment, perseverance, and selflessness into each one of her athletes.
“I enjoy seeing athletes accomplish things they never thought they could accomplish,” Johnson described. “Each one of my athletes are willing to run races and finish practices that are extremely difficult. Every time they step to the line, I know they are going to give it their best effort no matter what. I was a runner my whole life and running has brought me so much joy over the years, but the joy I get watching my athletes run is far better than any race I have ever competed in.”
